1886 Dynamo Electric Machinery Motor Magneto Machine
Title of your page goes here. 1886 dynamo electric machinery motor magneto machine +. This is a 527 page, 5 1/4 x 8 7/8, hardcover book titled and subtitled dynamo-electric machinery / a manual for students of electronics. The book was written by sylvanus p. Thompson, d.
Sc, b. A. Principal of, and professor of physics in the city and guilds of london technical college, finsbury late professor of experimental physics in university college, bristol. The book was first publishde in 1884. This is one of the second editions published in 1886 by e. & f. N. Spon.
There is no stated copyright as the reverse of the title page is blank. Please see condition below, but also pictures fo illustrations before deciding whether or not to bid.
As with most second editions, this book includes the preface to both the first and second editions. As stated in the first edition preface enormous as is the progress that has eben made in the last decade in the design and construction of electric machinery of all kinds, it may safely be said that there is no such thing yet as a best dynamo. As with the different kinds of voltaic batteries, some of which are used for telegraphic work, others for electric bells, and others for blasting, so it is also with dynamos. One form is bets for one purpose, and another for another.
One gives steadier currents, another is less liable to heat, a third is more compact, a fourth is cheaper, a fifth is less likely to reverse its currents, a sixth gives a greater volume of current, while a seventh evokes higher electromotive-force. Indeed, in the present transitional state of our knowledge with respect to dynamo-electric machinery, it is safe to assume that for a long time to come, there will be no finality atatined to. The first edition book included lecture material the author gave in 1882 on dynamo-electric machinery and a series of chapters on the mathematical theory of dynamo-electric machines and motors, a section dealing with the graphic method of calculation as applied to the characteristic curves of dynamos and descriptions of all the then recent inventions of importance. The second edition preface details some of the advances in theory and mathematics incorporated into the second edition which includes an increase of 110 pages and ninety-four cuts. Other additions include rewriting of the reactions between the armature and field magnets with the introduction of a section on the heating of pole-pieces the division of class i dynamos into two sub-classes, those in which the windings are united into a closed coil, and those which have an open coil arrangement additional forms of dynamo, including the then latest designs of gramme and siemens a new chapter on machines for electroplating and metallurgy and a new chapter on coupling two or more dynamos in one circuit additional information on electric motors and rewriting of the various sections relating to methods of making dynamos self-regulating.
In the appendices a considerable addition was made to the summary of formulae relating to electromagnets, notably the formula of lamont and a new appendices on the form of field magnets, on the influence of pole-pieces, and on electric governors. Condition the book has a great deal of text information.
However, given the condition as detailed here, it is the illustrations taht make this book special and in my estimation, worth bidding. The illustrations shown below aer better in the book. The book si in poor condition. The spine edge is essentially gone with only a small portion showing the publishers name, hanging loosely, attached by one edge.
The inner paper binding that covers the spine edge is also torn and partially torn away. The front and back covers are attached by three small bands of cloth that are held in place and bound to the pages by binding string. The cover cloth of the front and back boards with gold front cover print are unfaded.
The cover corners are badly bumped and the cloth at the corners has worn away exposnig the cover board. There are a couple spots of worn away cloth on the side edges and the cloth at the bottom edge of the back cover board is considerably worn away exposing the cover board.
The front and back covers are still preservable and useful should you choose to reconstruct the spine edge with paper, cardboard and tape or to have it professionally reconstructed. A paper label glued inside the front cover reveals the book was a former library book of case school of applied science, cleveland ohio (later to become case western reserve university). There is a previous owners name written in fountain epn ink on the front end page and the title page has ink stamps of the words withdrawn and stack along with a catalog number.
There are also three marking pen stripes, most likely covering some other markings thta were on the title page. The inside of the back cover has paper and glue residue left when a library card sleeve was likely pulled off. The front end page and title paeg are loose in the book. The prefaces and table of contents though bound together in page bundles are also loose in the book.
The remainder of the text is string bound and attached. There rae two edge torn pages. There are no missing or creased pages and the text pages are overall in very ogod condition. Though the book is in poor condition, if you have an interest in old dynamo machines or machines in general, you may want to have this book in spite of its condition. If so, please take the time and view the vintage illustrations below.
